A leading anti-Syrian Lebanese MP was among at least eight people killed today (13/06/2007) in a bomb explosion that hit a waterfront area in western Beirut, according to reports. Walid Eido, an MP for the Future Movement organisation, was killed in the huge blast, Lebanese TV reported. Mr Eido was a former close associate of Rafiq Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister whose February 2005 murder has been linked to Syrian officials by the UN. Syria has denied involvement in Hariri's death.
The attack happened about 15 minutes after I checked in in my hotel and I was about 300 metres away from the spot where it happened.
